AliExpress Dropshipping UK: VAT, Shipping & Legal Guide (2026)

AliExpress dropshipping UK works fine in 2026, but the rules are different from the US playbook most YouTube tutorials teach. AliExpress charges 20% UK VAT at checkout on orders up to £135, there's no customs duty on most of those parcels (for now), UK buyers have a legal right to cancel within 14 days, and you need to be registered with HMRC once you earn more than £1,000 a year. Get those four things right and the rest is product, ads and shipping speed.

This guide covers the parts UK sellers actually get stuck on: how VAT works when you resell AliExpress goods, what changes with the £135 customs rule, realistic delivery times to Britain, how to register the business, consumer law, payment processors and the niches that suit British buyers.

Can you do AliExpress dropshipping in the UK?

Yes. AliExpress ships to the UK, it's one of the platform's bigger European markets, and nothing in UK law stops you from selling products you don't hold in stock. You list a product on your Shopify, eBay or TikTok Shop store, a customer pays you, and you place the order on AliExpress with the customer's address as the delivery address. The margin is the gap between what they paid you and what you paid AliExpress, minus ads and fees.

What makes the UK different is that you're legally the retailer. Your customer's contract is with you, not with an AliExpress seller in Shenzhen. So when a parcel arrives late, broken or the wrong size, UK consumer law points at your store. Most of this guide is about managing that responsibility without eating your margin.

UK VAT on AliExpress orders: the £135 rule

Since January 2021 the UK has charged VAT on imported goods at the point of sale rather than at the border, for consignments worth £135 or less. When the sale happens through an online marketplace like AliExpress, the marketplace is responsible for charging and paying that VAT. HMRC's guidance on goods sold through online marketplaces is blunt about it: "the online marketplace will be liable for the VAT."

In practice, that's why your AliExpress basket shows a VAT line when your account is set to deliver to a UK address. A £10.00 item shows up as £12.00 at checkout. That £2.00 is paid, so the parcel shouldn't be stopped for VAT on arrival.

A few details matter for dropshippers:

  • The £135 limit is per consignment, not per item. If you order three £50 items from the same seller in one parcel, the consignment is £150 and normal import rules apply instead.
  • Over £135, the courier collects. VAT and any duty are billed to the person receiving the parcel, often with a handling fee on top. Per GOV.UK, the carrier holds the parcel for about three weeks and then returns it if the bill isn't paid. For a dropshipper, that means your customer gets a surprise bill. Expect a refund request, a bad review, or both.
  • The £135 is based on the price paid, not the retail price you charge. A £60 product you sell for £150 is still a sub-£135 consignment if AliExpress charged you £60.

What happens once you're VAT registered

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Plenty of UK dropshippers never reach it. If you do, two things change at once. First, you charge 20% VAT on your own sales, which comes straight out of your price unless you raise it. Second, you can reclaim the VAT you paid on business purchases, but only with a proper VAT invoice.

HMRC's marketplace rules also allow a business buyer to give the marketplace its UK VAT number, in which case the marketplace doesn't charge VAT and the buyer accounts for it under the reverse charge. Check your AliExpress account settings and order invoices before assuming you can reclaim anything. Plenty of sellers register for VAT, keep paying VAT at checkout, and then find their invoices don't support a reclaim. Talk to an accountant who has handled ecommerce clients before you cross the threshold, not after.

A quick worked example

Say you sell a heated hand warmer for £24.99. AliExpress charges you £7.50 plus £1.50 VAT, so £9.00 total, with free Choice shipping. Payment fees run about £0.75 and you spend £9.00 on Meta ads per sale.

  • Not VAT registered: £24.99 − £9.00 − £0.75 − £9.00 = £6.24 profit per order.
  • VAT registered at the standard rate: £24.99 includes £4.17 of output VAT. Even if you can reclaim the £1.50, your net VAT bill is £2.67, which cuts profit to £3.57. If you can't reclaim the input VAT, it's £2.07.

That's why UK sellers close to the threshold either raise prices before registering or move to higher-ticket products where a few pounds of VAT doesn't wipe out the margin. Our dropshipping profit margin calculator handles the maths if you want to run your own numbers.

Customs duty and the coming change to the £135 rule

Right now, non-excise goods worth £135 or less coming into Great Britain carry no customs duty. That's a big reason AliExpress dropshipping UK stays cheap compared with the US, where the de minimis exemption has gone. Above £135, duty is calculated on the price paid plus postage, packaging and insurance, at whatever rate applies to that product code.

This is changing. In July 2026 HMRC published Reforming customs rules for low value imports, which removes the £135 customs duty relief. The government's stated deadline is October 2028 at the latest. Under the new model, sellers and online marketplaces would account for the duty instead of the parcel being stopped at the border. Nothing has changed yet, but if your margins only work because of zero duty, start modelling a duty cost now. A product in a 12% duty bracket loses that 12% from somewhere.

Northern Ireland is a separate case. Goods considered "at risk" of moving into the EU follow different rules, so if you ship a lot to Belfast or Derry, read the NI section on GOV.UK.

Shipping times from AliExpress to the UK

Delivery time is the single biggest complaint driver for UK dropshipping stores. British shoppers are used to next-day Amazon Prime and two-day Royal Mail, so a 20-day wait feels broken even if you warned them.

Shipping routeTypical delivery to UKNotes
Cheapest seller shipping from China15–30+ daysFine for impulse items under £15, risky for anything else
AliExpress Choice / AliExpress Standard ShippingRoughly 7–15 daysBest default for most stores; tracking works with Royal Mail and Evri handover
Premium carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS)About 5–10 daysCosts more; check whether duty or VAT is billed to the recipient
Local stock (UK or EU warehouse)3–7 daysFilter "Ships from: United Kingdom"; EU stock may face extra import charges post-Brexit

Treat these as ranges, not promises. Peak season (late November to Christmas) and Chinese New Year add a week or more. AliExpress has also been building local fulfilment in Europe: in 2025 it was reported to have bought ten warehouses across the UK, Germany and Spain for its Local+ channel, with a seven-day delivery target.

One trap: products marked "Ships from: Spain" or "Ships from: France" are not domestic for UK customers anymore. After Brexit, an EU-to-UK parcel is an import, and depending on value and origin, extra charges can still apply. Always filter for United Kingdom when you want genuinely local stock.

Registering your dropshipping business in the UK

You don't need a company to start, but you do need to tell HMRC once you're earning.

Sole trader

Most people start here. GOV.UK says you must register as a sole trader and file Self Assessment if you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment in a tax year (6 April to 5 April). It's free, the paperwork is light, and profits are taxed as personal income. The downside is unlimited personal liability.

From 6 April 2026, sole traders with qualifying income above £50,000 also have to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, meaning digital records and quarterly updates through compatible software. The threshold drops in later years, so pick bookkeeping software that supports MTD from the start.

Private limited company (Ltd)

Incorporating through Companies House costs £100 online (the fee rose in February 2026). You get limited liability, profits are taxed at corporation tax rates (19% on profits up to £50,000, 25% above £250,000, with marginal relief between), and a Ltd looks more established to payment processors and suppliers. You also take on annual accounts, a confirmation statement and stricter record-keeping. Many sellers switch once profits reach the point where an accountant says the tax saving outweighs the admin.

Whichever route you choose, open a separate business bank account from day one. It makes VAT, Self Assessment and any HMRC question far easier to answer. For the bigger picture, read our guide to dropshipping taxes.

UK consumer law: returns, refunds and faulty goods

This is where AliExpress and UK law disagree, and the gap is your problem.

  • 14-day cancellation: Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, online buyers can cancel within 14 days of receiving an item, even if nothing is wrong with it. They then have another 14 days to send it back, and you must refund within 14 days of getting it back, including standard delivery costs (GOV.UK returns guidance). You can make the customer pay return postage if you say so clearly before purchase.
  • Faulty goods: The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives buyers 30 days to reject faulty goods for a full refund, and the right to a repair or replacement after that.
  • Information: You must show your business name, a geographic address and contact details, total prices including VAT and delivery costs, and how cancellation works.

AliExpress offers buyer protection and free returns on many items, but returning to an AliExpress seller usually means a parcel back to a return address the platform chooses, under its own timeline. Don't promise "returns to our UK address" if you don't have one. The cleaner approach for low-cost items is a "keep it, here's your refund" policy for anything under about £10, and a UK returns address (a family member, a virtual address, or a returns service) for higher-value orders. We cover the full process in how to handle dropshipping returns and refunds.

Product safety

Electricals need a UK three-pin plug (or a compliant adaptor supplied), and toys, electricals and PPE need appropriate UKCA or CE marking. Cosmetics have their own regulations. A lot of cheap AliExpress listings fail here. If a product would be dangerous when it fails, skip it or source from a supplier who can show test certificates.

Payment processors for UK dropshipping stores

  • Shopify Payments is available in the UK and is the simplest option on Shopify. New stores are often asked for proof of fulfilment and tracking, so keep your AliExpress order numbers organised.
  • PayPal is still expected by a large share of UK shoppers. New accounts selling products with long delivery times can see funds held until orders are confirmed delivered.
  • Stripe works well on WooCommerce and other platforms.
  • Klarna and Clearpay (buy now, pay later) are widely used in UK fashion and homeware, and can lift conversion on £40+ products.

Whichever you use, add tracking numbers quickly. Processors watch the gap between charge and fulfilment closely, and slow AliExpress shipping is a common trigger for reserves.

Best niches for AliExpress dropshipping UK

Good UK products tend to share one thing: they solve a British problem, and they fit in a small, light parcel.

  • Weather and energy: heated gilets, hand warmers, draught excluders, dehumidifier boxes and window film. UK demand spikes from October.
  • Pets: dog raincoats, slow feeders, car seat covers and grooming tools. See our list of winning pet products.
  • Home and garden: solar garden lights, plant care accessories and small-space storage for British flats and terraces.
  • Car accessories: phone mounts and organisers, but check for right-hand-drive compatibility. A lot of listings are designed for left-hand-drive cars.
  • Gifting: personalised and novelty gifts around Christmas, Mother's Day (March in the UK, not May) and Father's Day.

Avoid anything that needs a specific plug, has UK sizing that differs from Asian sizing (shoes and fitted clothing), or is likely to sit in a regulated category. To check that a product is actually selling for UK stores before you spend on ads, use a product database to see what is already selling, then check real revenue in a sales tracker.

How to start AliExpress dropshipping UK step by step

  1. Set your AliExpress account to the UK (Ship to: United Kingdom, currency GBP) so prices include VAT and shipping estimates are accurate.
  2. Pick a niche and validate demand. Look for products that UK Shopify stores are already selling consistently, not just products with viral TikTok views. Dropshiptool's Sales Tracker shows estimated revenue for real stores, which is a better signal than an order count on AliExpress.
  3. Vet suppliers. Look for 95%+ positive feedback, stores open for over a year, Choice or local warehouse shipping, and recent UK reviews with photos.
  4. Order samples to a UK address. Check packaging, delivery time and whether anything in the parcel names a price or the AliExpress seller.
  5. Build your store on Shopify, add clear delivery times, a returns policy that meets UK law, and your business details. Import products with AliDrop or a similar AliExpress app so orders and tracking sync automatically.
  6. Register with HMRC once you're about to pass £1,000 in income.
  7. Launch ads on Meta or TikTok targeting the UK. Before you write creatives, check what competing UK stores are running with an ad spy tool.
  8. Fulfil fast. Place AliExpress orders the same day and upload tracking straight away.

UK-based alternatives to AliExpress

If 7–15 days is too slow for your niche, use UK or EU stock instead. Spocket (spocket.co) lists suppliers in the US, UK and Europe with faster delivery and branded invoicing. Higher product costs, but fewer "where's my order" tickets. We've compared the main options in the best UK dropshipping suppliers, and if you're open to other Chinese platforms too, see our roundup of AliExpress alternatives.

A common setup for UK stores is hybrid: test products cheaply from AliExpress, then move proven winners to a UK supplier or a small stock run in a UK fulfilment centre once they sell daily.

Is AliExpress dropshipping UK worth it in 2026?

It's worth it if you treat it as a retail business with UK obligations, not a loophole. VAT is already built into AliExpress prices, there's still no duty on most parcels, and delivery is faster than it was a few years ago. The sellers who struggle are the ones who ignore consumer law, pick products with 20-day shipping, or don't plan for the duty change. Check the AliExpress Dropshipping Center for supplier data, validate demand with real store sales, and price for VAT from the start.

AliExpress Dropshipping UK FAQs

Is AliExpress dropshipping legal in the UK?

Yes. Dropshipping is a legal retail model in the UK. You need to register with HMRC once you earn more than £1,000 a year from self-employment, follow consumer law on cancellations and refunds, and only sell products that meet UK safety rules. Avoid branded replicas, unsafe electricals and anything that infringes trademarks, because you are the legal seller to your customer.

Do I pay VAT when I order from AliExpress for UK customers?

Usually, yes. For consignments worth £135 or less, AliExpress charges 20% UK VAT at checkout and pays it to HMRC, so the parcel shouldn't be stopped for VAT. Above £135, the courier collects import VAT and any customs duty from the recipient. If you're VAT registered, check whether your invoices allow you to reclaim that VAT.

Will my UK customers pay customs duty on AliExpress orders?

Not on most orders right now. Non-excise goods worth £135 or less entering Great Britain carry no customs duty. Orders above £135 can be charged duty, VAT and a handling fee by the courier. The government plans to remove the £135 duty relief by October 2028 at the latest, with marketplaces and sellers accounting for duty instead.

How long does AliExpress take to deliver to the UK?

AliExpress Choice and AliExpress Standard Shipping usually arrive in roughly 7 to 15 days. The cheapest seller shipping can take 15 to 30 days or longer, and premium couriers run about 5 to 10 days. Items marked "Ships from: United Kingdom" can arrive in 3 to 7 days. Peak season and Chinese New Year add delays.

Do I need a limited company to dropship in the UK?

No. Most sellers start as sole traders, which is free and only requires registering for Self Assessment once you earn over £1,000 in a tax year. A limited company costs £100 to set up online through Companies House and adds limited liability and corporation tax rates, but it comes with more admin. Many sellers incorporate once profits grow.

What are the best products for AliExpress dropshipping UK?

Products that solve UK-specific problems sell best: winter and damp-weather items, energy-saving home products, pet accessories, garden and small-space storage, and gifts around UK holidays. Avoid products that need a specific plug, rely on Asian sizing, or fall into regulated categories. Validate demand by checking what UK Shopify stores are actually selling before spending on ads.
