Is AliExpress Legit and Safe? An Honest 2026 Guide

Yes, AliExpress is legit. It's a real marketplace owned by Alibaba Group, millions of people buy from it, and payments made through the site are covered by AliExpress Buyer Protection. What isn't guaranteed is every seller on it. AliExpress hosts a huge number of independent stores, from genuine factories to resellers cutting corners, so whether your order goes well depends mostly on which seller you pick and how you pay.

This guide covers everything you need to buy (or dropship) from AliExpress safely in 2026: how buyer protection really works, how to vet a seller in two minutes, the scams to watch for, realistic shipping times, how to win a dispute, and whether AliExpress is still a sensible supplier for a dropshipping store.

Is AliExpress safe? The short version

  • The platform is legitimate. AliExpress is Alibaba Group's international retail marketplace, the same group behind Alibaba.com, Taobao and Tmall.
  • Your payment is protected when you pay through AliExpress checkout. Sellers don't see your card details.
  • Sellers vary a lot. Check store rating, order count, years open and photo reviews before buying.
  • Brand-name products at bargain prices are fakes. Always.
  • Shipping is much faster than it used to be on Choice and local-warehouse items, but slow on cheap postal shipping.
  • Don't click “confirm receipt” until you've checked the item. It can release payment to the seller and limit your options.

How AliExpress works (and why it's built to protect buyers)

AliExpress is a marketplace, like eBay or Amazon's third-party side. Independent sellers, mostly based in China, list products at fixed prices. You add items to your cart and pay AliExpress, not the seller. AliExpress holds the money until you confirm the order arrived as described or the protection period runs out, and only then pays the seller.

That escrow-style setup is what makes AliExpress safer than buying from a random overseas website. A seller who ships nothing, or ships a fake, doesn't get paid if you dispute in time. It's also why every safety tip in this guide comes back to the same rule: keep the whole transaction on AliExpress.

Why do people think AliExpress is a scam?

Look at AliExpress reviews online and you'll find plenty of angry ones. The complaints are real, but most fall into a few buckets:

  • Old shipping times. For years, cheap AliExpress orders took a month or more. Plenty of people still remember that.
  • Quality gaps. A $4 phone case is a $4 phone case. Photos are often edited or borrowed from better products.
  • Counterfeits. “Designer” sunglasses and “original” earbuds at a tenth of retail price are fakes, and buyers who expected the real thing feel scammed.
  • Lost disputes. Buyers who confirmed receipt early, missed the dispute window, or had no photo or video evidence often lose.
  • Misleading listings. The headline price belongs to the cheapest variant, which turns out to be a cable or a sticker, not the product in the photo.

None of that makes AliExpress itself a scam. It means you need to shop on it differently from Amazon.

AliExpress Buyer Protection explained

AliExpress Buyer Protection covers orders paid through the platform. In practical terms you can claim a refund when:

  • The order never arrives within the protection period
  • The item arrives damaged or broken
  • The item is significantly different from the listing (wrong product, wrong color, fake, missing parts)

Your order page shows a protection countdown for each order. That window is what counts, so check it. If shipping looks stuck, you can usually ask the seller to extend it before it expires.

For US shoppers, AliExpress announced extra guarantees in March 2024: delivery targets of 5 to 12 calendar days on Choice orders and 8 to 14 days on other marketplace orders, a $1 coupon if an order misses its estimated delivery date, a refund if an item isn't delivered within 30 days after shipment or arrives damaged or lost, and free returns on eligible items within 90 days of payment. Terms apply, and policies differ by country, so check the Buyer Protection details on your own order page.

What it doesn't cover: buyer's remorse on non-returnable items, damage you caused, and custom-made products in most cases. And if you confirm receipt before checking the item, you make your own life much harder.

How to open a dispute (and actually win it)

Disputes on AliExpress are won on evidence. Here's the process that works:

  1. Film the unboxing of anything over about $20, in one continuous take that shows the shipping label.
  2. Message the seller first through AliExpress messages. Many fix problems quickly with a partial refund or replacement, and the chat becomes evidence if they don't.
  3. Open the dispute from the order page (Orders, then the order, then the refund or return option) before the protection timer runs out.
  4. Choose the right reason (“not received,” “not as described,” “damaged”) and request either a full refund with return or a partial refund.
  5. Upload clear evidence: photos next to the listing, your video, measurements, screenshots of tracking.
  6. Escalate if the seller rejects your claim. AliExpress reviews both sides and makes the call.

If the platform process fails on a genuine non-delivery, a card chargeback or PayPal dispute is your backup. Use it as a last resort, since it can affect your AliExpress account.

How to vet an AliExpress seller in two minutes

Click through to the store from any product page and check these signals before you buy:

SignalGood signRed flag
Positive feedback95% or higherBelow 90%
Years open3+ yearsOpened in the last few months
Orders and reviews on the productHundreds of orders, many photo reviewsA handful of orders, all 5-star with no photos
Review contentSpecific details, mixed ratings, buyer photosRepetitive short praise, reviews about other products
Store focusOne category (e.g. phone accessories)Everything from dresses to drills
Delivery optionChoice or local warehouse, clear estimateOnly slow postal shipping, vague estimate
PriceIn line with similar listingsFar below everyone else

Read the 3-star reviews first. Five-star reviews tell you nothing, one-star reviews are often shipping rants, but three-star reviews describe what the product is actually like. Sort by reviews with photos and compare the buyer photos to the listing images.

Payment safety on AliExpress

Paying on AliExpress is safe as long as you pay through the checkout. AliExpress accepts major cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with buy-now-pay-later in some markets. A few habits make it safer still:

  • Never pay a seller directly. A seller who asks you to pay by bank transfer, Zelle, Venmo, crypto or “friends and family” PayPal, usually for a discount, is either a scammer or about to remove your protection.
  • Use a credit card or PayPal rather than a debit card, so you have a chargeback route if everything else fails.
  • Turn on two-step verification on your AliExpress account and check your order history now and then for orders you didn't place.
  • Ignore off-site “AliExpress” messages asking you to log in or confirm a payment. Go to the site or app directly.

Common AliExpress scams to avoid

Most AliExpress scams are old tricks. Knowing them is most of the protection you need.

  • The variant price trick. The listing says $2.99, but that's the price of a charging cable variant. The product in the main photo is $34. Always check which variant you've selected.
  • Counterfeit brands. Branded perfume, sneakers, earbuds or watches at a fraction of retail are fakes. Buying them for yourself is a gamble; selling them in your store can get it shut down.
  • Fake capacity electronics. The “2TB flash drive” for $9 is a small drive reprogrammed to report a bigger size. Files beyond the real capacity quietly corrupt. Stick to known storage brands from official stores.
  • Brushing and fake reviews. Sellers create fake orders and five-star reviews to push listings up. Repetitive, vague reviews and reviews for a different product are giveaways.
  • Fake tracking. Tracking shows “delivered” to the wrong city or a local post office you've never heard of. Screenshot it and dispute before the timer ends.
  • Sizing surprises. Not a scam, but the biggest source of “not as described” complaints on clothing. Use the seller's size chart in centimeters, and see our guide to converting Asian sizes to US sizes.
  • Off-platform payment requests. Covered above, and worth repeating. There's no safe version of this.

If you've been scammed by someone posing as an AliExpress seller off the platform, report it to AliExpress and, in the US, to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

AliExpress shipping times in 2026

Shipping is the area that's changed most. Products marked Choice ship with delivery targets and free shipping over a small threshold, and more sellers now stock local warehouses in the US, UK, EU and elsewhere. Based on AliExpress's own US targets, Choice orders aim for 5 to 12 days and other marketplace orders for 8 to 14 days. In practice, cheap postal shipping from smaller sellers can still take three weeks or more, and delivery to remote areas takes longer.

Shipping typeTypical speedNotes
Local warehouse (ships from your country)DaysFastest, often slightly pricier
AliExpress ChoiceAround 1 to 2 weeks to the USDelivery target and tracking included
AliExpress Standard ShippingAround 1 to 3 weeksReliable tracking for most countries
Seller's cheapest postal option2 to 6+ weeksTracking can go quiet for days

Duties matter too. The US suspended its $800 de minimis duty exemption for all countries from August 29, 2025 (CBP guidance), so low-value parcels now carry import duties. Check the total at checkout for import charges, because a product that looked cheap may not be once duties are added. Other countries apply VAT on imports in their own ways.

Refunds and returns: what to expect

Refunds for successful disputes go back to your original payment method. Cards usually take a few business days to a couple of weeks to show the credit, depending on your bank. If AliExpress offers the refund as store credit or a coupon, you can usually choose the original payment method instead.

Returns are where AliExpress differs most from Amazon. Free returns apply only to eligible items (look for the free return label on the listing). For other items, returning to China can cost more than the product, so many disputes end in a partial refund where you keep the item. That's often the best outcome for both sides.

AliExpress vs Temu, Shein and Amazon on trust

AliExpress isn't the only place selling low-cost goods from China anymore, and buyers often ask how it compares.

  • Amazon has the strongest consumer protection (A-to-z Guarantee, easy returns) and faster delivery, but many of its cheapest third-party products come from the same factories at higher prices.
  • Temu controls pricing and logistics centrally, so the experience feels more uniform, but you can't choose or vet individual sellers the way you can on AliExpress. We cover its model in why Temu is so cheap.
  • Shein is mostly its own fashion brand, so quality is consistent within a narrow range of clothing.
  • AliExpress gives you the most choice and the most transparency (store ratings, years open, photo reviews), which also means the most responsibility to choose well.

Scale isn't the issue. In its March 2024 announcement, AliExpress cited Similarweb data showing an average of 24.2 million US visits a month in 2023. The question is always the seller, never the site. For other supplier options, see our roundup of AliExpress alternatives.

Is AliExpress legit for dropshipping?

Yes, and it's still one of the most used suppliers for new Shopify stores. You can sell without holding stock, test products for the cost of ads, and the catalog covers almost every niche. The risks are different from buying for yourself, though, because your customer never sees AliExpress. They see your store, and they hold you responsible.

  • Order the product yourself first. Check quality, packaging and real delivery time to your main market.
  • Choose suppliers with Choice or local-warehouse stock so delivery times don't kill your reviews.
  • Ask suppliers not to include invoices, prices or promo flyers in your customers' parcels.
  • Line up a backup supplier for every bestseller, in case your main one runs out or raises prices.
  • Never sell branded goods. Payment processors and ad platforms will shut you down.
  • Handle disputes for your customers. You open the AliExpress dispute; your customer gets a refund or replacement from you. Our dropshipping returns and refunds guide covers the process.

If your customers are mostly in the US or EU and fast delivery matters to your brand, compare AliExpress with US-based suppliers. If you're weighing AliExpress against bulk buying, our AliExpress vs Alibaba guide explains when each makes sense.

AliDrop: the app option for AliExpress dropshipping

You can dropship from AliExpress manually, but it gets painful past a few orders a day. AliDrop, Spocket's sister app built for AliExpress dropshipping, imports AliExpress products into your Shopify store, keeps prices and stock in sync, and passes orders to suppliers. It also includes selections from Alibaba and Temu, plus US and EU suppliers for faster delivery.

How Dropshiptool helps you pick safer AliExpress products

The biggest risk with AliExpress dropshipping isn't a bad seller. It's spending your ad budget on a product nobody wants. Before you import anything, check whether it's already selling for other stores.

Pair that with the seller checks above and you're sourcing proven products from trustworthy suppliers. Try Dropshiptool to validate your next AliExpress product before you spend on ads.

The verdict: is AliExpress legit?

AliExpress is a legitimate, generally safe marketplace with real buyer protection, and in 2026 it ships faster than its reputation suggests. Your results depend on your choices: vet the seller, keep payment on the platform, skip branded bargains, record evidence, and dispute within the window. Do that and AliExpress works well, whether you're buying a phone stand or building a store around it. Ready to find products worth selling? Start with Dropshiptool.

Is AliExpress Legit? FAQs

Is AliExpress legit or a scam?

AliExpress is legit. It's Alibaba Group's international retail marketplace, and payments made through its checkout are covered by Buyer Protection. Scams happen at the seller level, not the platform level: counterfeit branded goods, misleading listings and requests to pay off-platform. Vet each seller's rating, order history and years open, and never pay outside AliExpress, and you'll avoid nearly all of them.

Is it safe to use my credit card on AliExpress?

Yes. You pay AliExpress, not the seller, so the seller never sees your card details. A credit card or PayPal is the safest choice because you keep a chargeback option as a last resort. Turn on two-step verification for your account, and ignore emails or messages outside the app that ask you to confirm payment details.

How long does AliExpress shipping take in 2026?

It depends on the shipping option. Items shipped from a local warehouse can arrive in days. AliExpress Choice orders to the US target 5 to 12 days, and other marketplace orders 8 to 14 days, based on AliExpress's published US delivery targets. The cheapest postal options from small sellers can still take three to six weeks, so check the delivery estimate before buying.

What happens if my AliExpress order never arrives?

Open a dispute from the order page before the Buyer Protection countdown ends and choose “order not received.” If tracking shows no delivery, you'll usually get a full refund to your original payment method. If the timer is close to running out and the parcel is still moving, ask the seller to extend the protection period instead of waiting.

Why is AliExpress so cheap?

Most sellers are manufacturers or wholesalers in China selling close to factory price, without the importer, distributor and retailer markups you'd pay in a local store. Low production costs, huge order volumes and consolidated shipping keep prices down. Very low prices on branded goods are different: those are almost always counterfeits.

Is AliExpress good for dropshipping?

Yes, for testing products without holding stock. The catalog is huge, there's no minimum order, and apps like AliDrop automate importing and order routing to Shopify. Pick suppliers with Choice or local-warehouse stock, order samples first, keep a backup supplier for bestsellers, and avoid branded products. Validate demand with a tool like Dropshiptool before you spend on ads.

Does AliExpress give refunds?

Yes. Buyer Protection covers orders that don't arrive, arrive damaged, or aren't as described. Some items also qualify for free returns. Refunds go back to your original payment method once a dispute is resolved in your favor. Film the unboxing of pricier items and keep all communication on AliExpress, because disputes are decided on evidence.
